Un banco de sauna no puede evaluarse solo por su altura. Upper Bench: Headroom and the Occupied Heat Zone

The upper bench has to solve two things at once: place the user in a useful part of the heated room and leave practical headroom below the finished ceiling. Raising the bench without checking the ceiling can make the seating position cramped. Putting it unnecessarily low can leave more of the hottest room volume above the user instead of around the occupied zone.

Harvia’s current bench-planning guidance recommends approximately 1100–1200 mm between its upper bench and the ceiling. Treat that as a named manufacturer planning reference—not a global code or a dimension that automatically applies to every sauna. Harvia’s bench-planning guidance.

Set the upper bench from the finished ceiling, intended posture and thermal position together rather than from one floor-to-seat number.

A seated user, someone sitting with feet on the same bench and someone reclining do not occupy the same vertical envelope. Lower Bench and Step Level: Access, Feet and Vertical Position

The lower level may work as seating, foot support, an access step or a combination of those functions. Those jobs should not be collapsed into one universal lower-bench height.

Its relationship to the upper bench changes ease of access, foot and lower-body position, usable legroom, circulation near the heater and the user’s position within the room’s vertical thermal environment. The drawing should therefore show the levels independently instead of merely specifying “two-tier benches.”

Harvia’s current bench-planning guidance uses about 350 mm for step height as a manufacturer planning recommendation. Treat that figure as a source-specific reference, not as a universal sauna, stair or accessibility requirement. Harvia’s bench-planning guidance.

How Deep and Long Should a Sauna Bench Be for Sitting, Reclining and Real Capacity?

Bench depth should follow posture; bench length should be judged by usable occupied positions. Neither should be approved from a universal dimension or person-count rule.

Sitting vs. Reclining Depth

A surface used mainly for upright sitting does not have the same depth requirement as one intended for sitting with the feet up or lying down.

Harvia’s current planning guidance uses about 500 mm as a reference for upper-bench depth and recommends 600 mm or more when reclining or sitting with the feet on the bench is intended. These are useful manufacturer recommendations, not universal minimum dimensions.

  1. Define the intended posture.
  2. Identify the depth needed for that posture.
  3. Check what that depth does to circulation and lower-tier geometry.
  4. Confirm that the final room still works.

A deeper bench can support more postures, but it also consumes room width. More depth is not automatically better.

Usable Length vs. Marketed Person Capacity

Bench length creates a different problem: buyers often treat the model’s person count as proof that the physical seating arrangement will be comfortable. It is not.

For capacity, use the full decision chain: marketed capacity → actual bench run → heater/door exclusions → usable occupied positions → intended posture → realistic fit.

Real usable capacity changes when the heater or guard removes part of the run, the door interrupts the bench, users want to recline, corners reduce usable posture, or depth is inadequate for the intended use.

Catalog capacity ≠ usable bench capacity ≠ comfortable capacity ≠ commercial throughput.

Straight, L-Shaped or Opposing Benches: Which Layout Uses the Room Best?

There is no universally best sauna bench layout. The best layout is the one that leaves the most useful occupied space after the heater, door and circulation route are included.

In a small room, a simple straight layout can preserve more useful seating than forcing a corner or U-shaped arrangement into the same footprint. An L-shaped bench can work well when the room genuinely supports it, but it should not be selected simply because it looks more premium on a plan.

Opposing benches need sufficient room for users’ legs, circulation and the heater arrangement. Harvia’s bench guidance likewise notes that heater placement can consume part of the central space between opposing benches.

The useful comparison is how much uninterrupted, usable bench geometry remains after equipment and access are drawn.

What Safety and Accessibility Constraints Can Override a Comfortable Bench Layout?

A comfortable bench is not automatically an acceptable bench. Three different approval layers can affect the same drawing: comfort and ergonomics, heater and hot-surface safety, and accessibility or other project requirements where applicable.

Heater and Guard Clearances

The selected heater’s safety envelope takes priority over extra seating. Harvia’s current technical guidance states that heaters have model-specific safety distances governing how close they may be to combustible walls and benches, and that those values come from the exact heater’s rating plate, instructions or product information. Access, Steps and Fall Risk

The route to the bench matters as much as the bench itself. A layout should be checked for whether users can reach the intended level without being directed awkwardly toward the heater or guard.

  • Can users reach the upper level without a heater conflict?
  • Does the door interfere with the route?
  • Does extra bench depth squeeze circulation?
  • Does the lower tier actually help access, or only look symmetrical?

Exact heater and guard requirements still belong to the selected equipment instructions.

Accessibility Where Applicable

Accessibility is a separate project requirement from ordinary residential ergonomics. Under the U.S. 2010 ADA Standards, where the relevant sauna/steam-room provisions apply, seating can trigger an accessible-bench requirement, and related clear-floor, turning and door-swing relationships also matter. Do not take an accessible-bench dimension from a U.S. regulated context and publish it as the normal height or depth for every residential sauna.

What Bench Details Make Cleaning, Drying and Maintenance Easier?

Bench layout also controls whether the room can be cleaned, dried and inspected after installation.

  • Can the floor under the bench be reached?
  • Can wood surfaces dry after use?
  • If the selected bench system includes removable sections, can they actually be removed without dismantling other components?
  • Can the heater and nearby service areas still be accessed?
  • Do backrests, footrests or lower levels create hidden areas that are difficult to inspect?

That does no mean every sauna bench needs to be removable. It means cleanability belongs in the geometry review before the layout is approved. There is also no basis here for inventing one universal board-gap value that supposedly guarantees better drying or hygiene.

What Should You Confirm on the Drawing Before Approving a Sauna Bench Layout?

Do not approve a sauna bench from a rendering, person-count label or one isolated dimension. The controlled drawing should make the complete occupied geometry reviewable.
